I want to start with what I keep telling myself:
 These three precious animals are safe.
They are all on pain medication and antibiotics.
They have felt an abundance of love over the last few hours.
 It’s really hard to process everything we saw today. For now, I want to give a brief overview of each of them, and then share more about their individual stories throughout the week.
 The senior male has long hooves, but he’s walking okay. He needs to gain a few hundred pounds. His chest sounds and bloodwork were normal. But his eye… his eye is still there, yet the inflammation and drainage are shocking, and he is clearly in pain. He’ll be staying at the hospital so that the eye can be removed.
 The senior female with the large wound on her side also had surprisingly normal bloodwork and chest sounds. The wound has been there for quite some time. There were maggots present and necrotic skin. It was carefully removed and thoroughly cleaned, but she will likely need further medical attention, so she will also be staying for a few days.
 The younger female was hanging her head so low on the trailer that the vet initially thought she was already sedated. We walked her into the stocks and began examining her eye. Was there an eye? What was going on? X-rays were taken, and we were all shocked by what they revealed: shotgun pellets. Someone shot her in the eye. That side of her face is severely swollen and hard. Right now, we can’t tell if that’s solely from the pellets or if something else is going on, like a mass. The priority is pain management, antibiotics, and helping her gain weight. She is coming home today and will return next week for further evaluation of her eye and overall condition.
 I am sharing some photos from today. They are horrific. They are upsetting. But they are the reality of what far too many horses are enduring.
 They are safe today because of this community. Thank you for caring, for bearing witness, and for standing with them as their healing begins ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹
