Spoiler: Eric chooses not to adopt Tommy because he sees the couple from California and he realizes they would be far greater parents than he ever could. Out of his love for Tommy, he chooses to give him up and let the Californian couple take him instead. He would live the next decade or so believing Tommy hated him. Eventually, Eric runs for political office (Girl Meets World) and Tommy shows up at the debate. Tommy forgives him, having realized the real reason Eric chose not to adopt him.
