His wife, Emma Heming Willis, disclosed the decision in her book The Unexpected Journey, describing it as emotionally difficult but scientifically necessary, and noted that his ex-wife Demi Moore and all five of his daughters back it. The medical case is specific. Frontotemporal dementia cannot be confirmed while a patient is alive, and scans cannot show what tissue can: abnormal protein deposits, structural changes in neurons, mutations in the progranulin gene tied to inherited forms of the disease. Teams developing gene therapies need real brains to measure whether anything is working. FTD is the most common dementia among people under 60 and has no treatment. Willis, 71, was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022 and FTD in 2023. The family launched the Emma & Bruce Willis Fund for Dementia Research and Caregiver Support in March.
