For anyone complaining about the show being woke, John’s parents are mad for a rightful reason but they are still held up on it and the privilege they say Hal has vs John is supposed to be wrong because Hal is not fully privileged, Hal saw his father die in front of him which instilled this defiance of fear that John’s father didn’t have, the ring is a genetic marker looking at people with high will power so John’s father might have had more willpower than Hal but he didn’t have the power to overcome his fear, John’s father was held up over this and they thought it was a race issue and that is part of it but his father just didn’t have the real willpower to overcome the test, as well as John’s parents abuse of him instills his overcoming of fear that his father didn’t have. Idk could be wrong and I’m happy to more discussion just my thoughts on it, yes race is important but early in the series it’s state willpower doesn’t equal the moment u can actually stand up to ur fears and john’s father lacked it and rightfully in a way got pissed off that a white man got it over him

It is clear they want to refine the selection process. Sinestro betrayed them, Hal and Abin Sur were both quite rebellious. They want the manhunters, but, they need the compassion of living beings. They are hoping John will bridge the gap.

Guardians created this system but they can’t fully control it. And a lot of the problems the corps faces are caused by the Guardians interfering in how the rings work. In fact, the Guardians aren’t so much good guys as they are control freaks.

i think John's mom's point was not that Hal had white privilege, but that he had the privilege of not being black. She was saying being the Green Lantern as a black man is harder because being black in white America makes it harder to not be afraid
