@1.umbrella.sportsandent: FOUR ICONS, ONE EXTRAORDINARY 20-YEAR WINDOW For exactly 20 years and 15 days, four men who would become some of the most influential Black figures of the 20th century were all alive at the same time: Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X and Bob Marley. The remarkable period began on February 6, 1945, when Bob Marley—the youngest of the four—was born in Nine Mile, St. Ann, Jamaica. It ended on February 21, 1965, when Malcolm X was assassinated in New York. That gives an exact overlap of 20 years and 15 days. Though their journeys were different, each would leave a powerful mark on history. Martin Luther King Jr. became an international symbol of the struggle for civil rights and nonviolent resistance. Malcolm X emerged as a fearless advocate for Black dignity, self-determination and human rights. Muhammad Ali became heavyweight champion of the world while using his enormous platform to speak boldly about race, religion, war and personal conviction. And from Jamaica, Bob Marley would eventually carry reggae and messages of liberation, resistance, African consciousness, unity and justice to audiences across the globe. Interestingly, Marley was only 20 and Ali just 23 when Malcolm X died in 1965. King was 36. Their greatest periods of international prominence therefore did not all occur simultaneously, even though their lives overlapped. Four different men. Four different approaches. Four extraordinary legacies. For 20 years and 15 days, they all walked the Earth at the same time — February 6, 1945 to February 21, 1965. 🌍✊🏿
