Endeavor rped and absed Rei to the point of her insanity. While what Rei did was wrong, saying she’s just as bad as endeavor is extremely messed up and underplays her trauma. Rei saw Shoto and her mind in a frenzied state probably thought he was endeavor. When she burned him with the boiling water she panicked and tried to freeze it to help Shoto but that only made the burn worse. Endeavor neglected and absed his children as well and Shoto already had gotten more pain both mentally and physically from his father than the visible reminder of what his mother did to him. Yes she was wrong, yes endeavor is a horrible parent, but they aren’t both equally horrible.

the anime neglecting to show her immediatly rushing towards shoto crying and trying to relieve the hot water (to the point it actually is a freeze scar, shoto has fire resistency) is the one at fault for this whole discussion. When she saw him she genuinely thought it was endeavor and he was going to hurt her for speaking up about the abuse. Rei wasn't an abusive mother, she was a woman who had no say in who she would end up with and who had no way out

Do I excuse her actions? No. Do I understand them? Absolutely. And Rei does blame herself (at least partially) for what her children went through because she didn't get help. I understand why she didn't (the abuser was a pro hero with high standing so there's a chance nothing would come of it) but nothing was done to protect those children

Shotos mother is a victim, point blank. Victims of abuse very often have warped perceptions of the world and are surrounded by fear and tension, and they often end up lashing out as a result of being so high strung and alert at all times. That being said, reactionary abuse is still abuse, especially since Shoto was as much of a victim to his father’s abuse as his mother was. Her guilt and fear in relation to her burning Shoto was very real, even though she’d been the one to hurt him. Does she still need to at least be held accountable? Yes. But not to the level that Endeavor does.

Oh my god people Victims arent perfect, there is no way in hell yall are saying both. Yall OBVIOUSLY dont understand mental health. The action wasnt right, but her mental health was rock bottom. Remember, she was still going through abuse during this time period daily, im so sick of people not taking mental health seriously.

In this case, I do believe Rei's actions are her own. However, I do not put most of the weight of responsibility on her, that's on Endeavor AND on Rei's parents. Something I feel like people don't like acknowledging is that Rei herself was barely 16 when she was sold to Endeavor, her eldest two children are barely nine months apart. Doesn't absolve her of everything, but her mental state and what led to it are far more important than the act of burning Shoto in my opinion.

What Rei did was a direct response to the abuse she faced. Obviously it's not good that she did it, but she was mentally broken and had no was out. She didn't have any sort of support. Obviously whether someone forgives their parent for doing something like this is up to the individual, but overall Rei is not in the fucking wrong, she literally had a mental breakdown

i dont think its reis personal failing that she was a bad mother. but its because of the circumstances she was inbut that doesnt not make her a bad mother, its just all the more tragic that the odds were unfairly stacked against both of them. even if she was just distant due to the nature of shotos birth, thats still very toxic.

I don’t necessarily blame her for burning Shoto’s face, as it was a severe trauma response that she was immediately weeping over and screaming in harrowing guilt. Where things get messy is the fact she knew Endeavour was extremely abusive towards Shoto, and never contacted the police. But she herself was abused, so I don’t know whether or not I can be mad at her for not getting help, as abuse wears a person down.

Shoto’s mum burnt Shoto because of our psychotic episode she probably seeing endeavour in front of her instead of Shoto and when she heard him scream, she snapped out her psychotic episode and realised what she had done

when it comes to abusive parents like this, one parent is a victim and abuser themselves, while the other is THE abuser. it's a survival mechanism, but these hierarchical structures are survival mechanisms. it boils down to she was severely mentally ill due to her own abuse and it caused her to abuse Shouto. it doesn't absolve her, but we can't erase her as a victim too. the point of the Todoroki family is that things aren't black and white. a Hero family, the family of the Number Two/One, is actually brutally suffering under his abuse. it demands you question what makes a real Hero
