The headscarf is older than Judaism, Christianity AND Islam ☪️ ✝️ ✡️ From the research I’ve done it says that the oldest known veiling law comes from ancient Assyria, over 3,000 years ago. Married women HAD to veil in public and if a woman was enslaved women or worked as a prostitute she was forbidden to, and could be flogged for trying. The veil wasn’t about God. It was about status. It told you which women were “respectable.” Then the three big religions inherited it. ✡️ Judaism: The Torah never directly commands it. The rabbis built the rule from a verse about a suspected adulteress having her hair uncovered. Today, Orthodox married women mostly cover their heads with a scarf, a headband, a hat, or a sheitel (a wig). ✝️ Christianity: Paul wrote that a woman should cover her head when praying (1 Corinthians 11). The Catholic Church required it until 1983. Most Western Christians dropped it within a single century. ☪️ Islam: The Qur’an never uses “hijab” to mean a headscarf. It means a curtain between men and women. The scarf verses (24:31, 33:59) talk about the khimar and outer cloaks. Classical scholars treated covering the hair as required; the face veil was a minority view. Elsewhere, Roman brides wore a flame-coloured veil, Hindu women in parts of North India veil with the sari before elders. For over 3,000 years the same piece of cloth has meant status, devotion, protection, oppression and resistance. So no, it’s not a Muslim thing.
