@isittherightword: Taylor's Icons interview showed something that we haven't seen from her for a long time, which is vulnerability. It seems like she's already gearing up for her Grammy strategy, which is basically to ignore Life of a Showgirl and push I Knew It, I Knew You. Perhaps she may have accepted that Life of a Showgirl was a critical failure despite it selling so many records. I actually think that for Taylor Swift's artistry this is a good thing. Art is created from a space of tension, a space of hunger, and a space of wanting something more and looking for something greater. Taylor operates best when she has something to prove. After her Life of a Showgirl, in many ways to many people, including the Academy, she has something to prove again. Let's just see what the next chapter holds. #taylorswift #popculture #grammys #iknewitiknewyou #folklore My podcast Critical Condition is finally out!!! Available everywhere you get your podcasts! The life of a showgirl actually made it hard for me to listen to her other music for a while

This Grammy campaign isn’t to win, it’s just to be included. She is fighting uphill for the first time in a long time

I also feel like she is constantly chasing what’s popular. Sabrina’s risqué lyrics was all the hype, she writes Wood. It doesn’t land. She sees Ella Langley at the top for a long time signaling people are back into country, she pivots there.

my theory was always that in Miss Americana she knows that she's fading & is winding down. I think folklore & evermore weren't about proving herself or trying to reclaim glory - they were the result of her finally giving herself permission to just be an artist. the incredible successes of both just put her right back on the hamster wheel. midnights is a transition album but she lost herself again. People love ttpd but for me it's pure self indulgence over restraint, word salad over art (with some truly great songs because she is obviously very talented)

She’s fascinating because she always does these in-between album cycle press runs where she’s reflecting on the criticism she got from the most recent release. Her public obsession with the criticism she gets is such a distinct feature of hers

Her last album was so bitter! Hiding her wedding photos is what makes me think she’s mad at her fans.

when you get to a Taylor swift / Beyoncé level of fame you cannot come across as desperate. Beyoncé goes away and comes back with something unexpected and groundbreaking CONSISTENTLY and clearly does not follow trends or try to fit in etc. I so badly wish Taylor had that same confidence. Every move she takes reeks with desperation of approval. I loved her so much in her debut era but now she REFUSES to slay and it makes me so mad lmao. If you’re at the top ACT LIKE IT

She was pausing for claps quite often- and they weren’t there. She is clearly too used to adoration from the fans when she says anything. I think her pausing for claps, and they were not there, definitely got in her head the more the time went on.

I could listen to you all day analyze TS and pop culture in general. You’re so thoughtful and empathetic, yet exacting with your takes.

People had trouble with reputation at first because of the social aspect of the album, the Kim/kanye/snake of it all. But it is objectively good music. People have trouble with showgirl because it’s below the expectations that’s she has set for herself and her fans and it’s bad. Societal views can change. But bad music doesn’t.

She is also surrounded by a lot of “yes” people. In the eras documentary, she literally had no criticism (pushback is probably a better word). For her most basic ideas she was called a genius. 🤷♀️

I think she’s promoting I knew it I knew you to go back to her country roots because she’s going to release debut hearing up to it’s 20th anniversary, she has nothing to fear about her legacy people who say that are trolling for clicks it’s lame and she’s right people didn’t like reputation at first because it was ahead of its time and people didn’t get it seems like maybe that’s you

I think she grew so accustomed to Swifties defending her work over the years that when the response to TLOASG was overwhelmingly negative, especially when so much of the criticism came from her own die-hard fan base, she became bitter toward the very fans who had always defended her.

I honestly think she just needs to live life for a while and allow inspiration to find her…life has changed for her a ton since Eras tour, and it seems like some downtime to live her new life and find creative inspiration from her new life, new family, new experiences, etc. would maybe benefit her art? Showgirl felt like an album that was crying out for more inspiration and creative influences, which is always going to be so much harder to find while you’re on a massive tour. But I’m not sure if she has a network around her to challenge her creative process and push her into making excellent art again, which is probably natural for an artist as big and successful as she is.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, she needed to take a break after the eras tour. she's too in the publics face and it's affected her likeness. if she were to step away, it would have made people miss her and people would actually want her to release music again.

I think it’s the best thing that Taylor accepts this as a failures, sometimes artist can make a dud, it’s fine . I just hope she takes time to look at why it might of failed,( in my opinion mainly due to a lack of intresting things to say and an intresting way to say it ) and stop looking to her die hard fans for validation but they are pulling her down artistically by praising her every breath, imo its caused her to stop trying.

seems like the wealthier she gets, the slower she is to respond to the cultural moment. country has been increasingly popular, with alt/indie artists doing country-esque music. TLOAS did not sound anything like the rest of the pop music landscape, imo.
