What are we doing to our tradition? Masquerade used to be sacred. It was mystery. It was spirit. It was something our fathers treated with fear, respect and order. Today the secret is gone. Masquerade no longer has boundaries. Women are now mingling with masquerade freely. People are showing their faces while on masquerade like it’s just costume. Masquerades are being taken to hotels to be worn, cameras are on, and in a few minutes everything is on social media for the whole world to laugh at us. Now it’s even about money and competition. Costly sneakers, expensive clothes, flexing wealth through something that was meant to connect us to our ancestors. The GenZ generation is trying very hard to destroy and shatter what was handed to us. They are turning our heritage into content, into cruise, into clout. And the painful part is this. Our elders are seeing it. Our traditionalists are seeing it. Our title men are seeing it. And everyone is keeping quiet. If we don’t take our time, if we don’t stand up now and correct this, very soon women will start wearing masquerades. And when that line is crossed, what else will be left of us?
