When expired food products are being sold openly in our markets, the biggest question shouldn’t only be, “How did these products get here?” It should also be: Who is responsible for protecting the public when this happens? NAFDAC has recently stated that its jurisdiction over certain unbranded, unpackaged staple foods sold in markets is limited. But this reminds me of the 2006 bird flu crisis, when then NAFDAC DG, Dora Akunyili, publicly ate chicken to reassure Nigerians that properly handled chicken was safe to eat. That moment represented something important: public confidence in a regulatory system depends on knowing who is responsible when things go wrong. So when expired or potentially unsafe food is being sold to Nigerians in our markets, who do we hold accountable? Which agency is responsible for detecting it? Which agency removes it? Who investigates where it came from? And most importantly, who protects the consumer? Because public health cannot work when responsibility falls into the gaps between institutions. The question is not just, “Who has jurisdiction?” The question is: who has responsibility? #tallnigeriandoctor #draizident
