@tom.fitzgerald13: The silver mask worn by Baldwin IV in Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven has become probably the most recognisable image of the Leper King. The problem is that there is no surviving contemporary evidence that Baldwin actually wore one. Our most important source for Baldwin’s life is William of Tyre, who knew him personally and had been his tutor. William gives us a remarkably intimate description of the king’s illness, including the first signs of numbness in his hand and the later deterioration of his face, eyesight and limbs. But he never mentions a mask. Later medieval illustrations also show Baldwin with his face uncovered, although these are not portraits from life and should not be treated as definitive evidence of his appearance. The silver mask appears to be a cinematic invention. It was already present in William Monahan’s early screenplay for Kingdom of Heaven, which describes “the king wearing a mask of silver,” but I have not found any reliable evidence linking it to a specific medieval object or historical tradition. A silver mask would be something that his enemies would have registered, and there's no record of it. It's highly probable that, when the face became really deformed, he would have concealed it with some kind of veil or turban - geographically makes more sense, lighter, not as hot as a silver mask.

I always assumed it was just an art and makeup decision to save time and possibly money on makeup for a “leprosy face” or the actor simply could stand that kind of makeup so a mask was easier

He didn’t behind a mask, but constantly wore a veil later on in his reign, they also found out of the leprosy as when Baldwin was playing with these children, he had fallen, and had a pretty deep cut in his arm, to which he only noticed due to the blood, and did t feel the pain at all, which was a trademark symptom/sign of leprosy at the time, he did only start to wear the veil after his face had started to become disfigured
