@medicaldoctor48: KEY SIGNS OF NEWBORN JAUNDICE EVERY MAMA SHOULD KNOW Mama, newborn jaundice is common, especially during the first week of life. But that does not mean every case should be ignored. Jaundice happens when there is too much bilirubin in the baby’s blood, causing the skin and the whites of the eyes to look yellow. So what should you look out for? 1. YELLOW SKIN You may notice your baby’s skin becoming yellow, usually starting from the face and sometimes spreading down toward the chest, tummy, arms and legs. 2. YELLOW EYES The whites of your baby’s eyes may also look yellow. 3. BABY IS TOO SLEEPY A jaundiced baby may become unusually sleepy or difficult to wake for feeds. 4. BABY IS NOT FEEDING WELL If your baby is sucking poorly, refusing feeds or feeding much less than usual, don’t ignore it. 5. FEWER WET DIAPERS Poor feeding can lead to dehydration, so pay attention to your baby’s urine and wet diapers. 6. JAUNDICE THAT APPEARS VERY EARLY If your baby becomes noticeably yellow within the first 24 hours after birth, mama, this needs urgent medical assessment. And please don’t rely on sunlight or home remedies to treat jaundice. Some newborn jaundice is mild and resolves with proper feeding and monitoring, but high bilirubin levels can become dangerous if not treated. If your baby is becoming increasingly yellow, is difficult to wake, is not feeding properly, has a high-pitched cry, becomes unusually floppy or stiff, or you are simply worried about the baby’s condition, seek medical attention immediately. Mama, don’t wait for the baby to become “very yellow” before getting help. Newborn jaundice is common, but severe jaundice is not something to manage at home.
