International: Heavy rains trigger mudslides and flooding in Chile, injuring six. Heavy rains battered Chile’s capital and surrounding areas on Thursday, triggering mudslides and flooding that swept cars through streets, inundated homes, and forced residents to evacuate. At least six people were injured, including a one-year-old child who suffered broken bones, while firefighters rescued or evacuated more than 1,000 people, authorities said. President José Antonio Kast declared a state of emergency in Las Condes, a suburb east of Santiago, to strengthen the government’s response to the disaster. Mayor Catalina San Martín said 14.4 centimetres of rain had fallen in recent days, approximately nine times the average rainfall for October, leaving the area saturated and vulnerable to further flooding and landslides. The Mapocho River, which runs through Santiago, overflowed, prompting evacuation orders. Chile’s disaster-response agency also placed 10 other districts on high alert for possible landslides and ordered schools closed on Friday. The downpours followed storms earlier in the week that damaged dozens of homes across central Chile and left nearly 12,000 customers in Santiago without electricity. Authorities said the rain was expected to ease on Friday. No deaths had been reported as of Thursday. The flooding comes as a powerful El Niño weather pattern gains strength. The World Meteorological Organization said the phenomenon was expected to peak in December and could rank among the strongest since at least 1950. El Niño involves the warming of tropical Pacific Ocean waters and can disrupt rainfall patterns worldwide, often bringing wetter spring conditions to parts of the Southern Hemisphere. #newstoday #trending #like #followus #fyp #iannews #iannetwork #worldnews #trinidadandtobago #caribbean #regional #international #instagram #tiktok ~C.S
