Napoleon Bonaparte (15 August 1769 – 5 May 1821) was a French military commander and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and became Emperor of the French in 1804. Born in Corsica, Napoleon quickly distinguished himself as a talented artillery officer. His military successes during the Italian campaign made him one of the most prominent figures in France. In 1799, he seized political power in the Coup of 18 Brumaire and became First Consul of France. As Emperor, Napoleon reorganized the French state and introduced reforms that had a lasting influence on Europe. The Napoleonic Code established principles of civil law that influenced legal systems far beyond France. He also reformed education, administration, taxation, and the relationship between the state and the Catholic Church. Napoleon was also one of history's most successful military commanders. His campaigns transformed the political map of Europe, and his victories at Austerlitz, Jena, Friedland, and other battles established French dominance across much of the continent. However, his expansion eventually brought him into conflict with most of Europe's major powers. The disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812 marked a turning point in his fortunes. After further defeats, Napoleon abdicated in 1814 and was exiled to the island of Elba. He returned to France in 1815, beginning the period known as the Hundred Days. His final defeat came at the Battle of Waterloo, after which he was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena. Napoleon died there on 5 May 1821, aged 51. His legacy remains deeply controversial. He is remembered simultaneously as a brilliant military strategist, a powerful reformer, and an ambitious ruler whose wars caused enormous destruction across Europe.
