I think it was because Tumblr was such a niche space for language. It hit a niche of info dumping and long informational/elaborate texts that allowed for genuine communication without the need to shorten or summarize your text because you KNEW your followers were dedicated enough to read everything and engage with it. It's why fandom culture exploded on there- people genuinely cared to interact and communicate without worrying about the other person being inconvienced or not wanting it. So most Tumblr users became well-read, well-spoken and often used grammar and syntax that was uncommon in other internet spaces save fandom hubs (it's why Tumblr users are accused of using AI now, AI was TRAINED on Tumblr! Tumblr used the em dash and Oxford comma more than ANY OTHER PLATFORM!)

My brother spent a lot of time online in non-Tumblr areas and every now and then I’ll be like “where’d you get that phrase?” And he’ll be like “oh a shit post, I think” and I’ll go “ahhhh someone stole that from tumblr” and it never fails to piss him off. He firmly believed these things migrated to tumblr and not from it so it bothered him when I could prove I was right.

There is a certain vernacular tumblr people tend to have. And linguists are very good. My ex was able to identify that I grew up and learned English in South Florida off of my pronunciation alone 😭

I’m a linguist and I once heard someone talk about tree lawns. I asked “so where in the Cleveland area are you from” they answered but were also so startled as to how I immediately clocked it lmao
