The Lockheed U-2 "Dragon Lady" is a legendary high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft that, after nearly 70 years of service, remains the U.S. Air Force's only manned, strategic ISR platform, capable of flying above 70,000 feet to collect critical imagery and signals intelligence. Built in the 1950s by Lockheed's Skunk Works, this single-seat, single-engine jet is powered by a General Electric F118 turbofan and features a 105-foot wingspan that allows it to loiter for 10 to 12 hours at extreme altitudes. It carries a modular payload of advanced sensors, including the SYERS-2C multispectral EO/IR system, the ASARS-2A synthetic aperture radar, and the Airborne Signals Intelligence Payload (ASIP), all capable of transmitting data in near real-time to ground stations. Despite its enduring capability, the U-2 is now facing retirement, with a phased divestment expected to be complete by FY2027, as the Air Force shifts toward satellites and unmanned systems. The debate over its retirement is ongoing, with Congress pushing to keep some aircraft in service, but the platform's survivability against modern air defenses like the S-400 and the physical demands it places on pilots are key factors driving its eventual replacement. #u2spyplane #usairforce #aviation
