For almost eight years, I planted trees in the forestry industry. More than 1.5 million of them. At the time, I believed I was helping restore logged forests while pushing myself to see what I was physically capable of. But I never looked deeply enough at what happened before I arrived or after I left. Many of the trees I planted were part of commercial forestry operations built around monocultures and economic outcomes, not the restoration of healthy, resilient ecosystems. I should have asked more questions. It was only after I began sharing my work online and listening to people who challenged the industry that I started to understand the difference between simply planting trees and truly restoring an ecosystem. Real restoration is not about putting as many trees as possible into the ground. It means working with local communities, planting native and diverse species, protecting existing ecosystems and making sure the work creates lasting impact. Tree planting taught me discipline, endurance and everything I know about the work itself. It also forced me to confront how much I still had to learn. Over the past few years, I have redirected my energy toward building Antomos and supporting restoration projects designed around long term ecological impact. We are nowhere near where I want this mission to be. There are still ecosystems to restore, forests to protect and better ways of doing this work to build. I want to bring you with me.
