2026 SPRING UPDATE of all the things that will impact tourism in Japan! 🌸🔗I make one of the videos quarterly & this video will be attached to a playlist with other updates I have made. 🌸March 1, 2026 ↳ Kyoto Accommodation Tax Increase‪ for hotel stays in Kyoto.‬ These increases are tier-based so the more you spend a night the more you get taxed and it is charged per person/per night on top of your hotel bill on check-in. This applies to all accommodations types in Kyoto City and you cannot avoid this price increase by booking ahead of time. Here are the changes: • Under ¥6,000/night: ¥200 (no change) • ¥6,000–¥19,999: ¥400 (was ¥200) • ¥20,000–¥49,999: ¥1,000 (was ¥500) • ¥50,000–¥99,999: ¥4,000 (was ¥1,000) • ¥100,000+ per night: ¥10,000 (was ¥1,000) 🌸March 14, 2026 ↳ East Japan Railway Company is raising fares effective March 14, 2026, with an average increase of about 7.1% across fares. This includes: Base fare on the Yamanote Line increasing (e.g., from ¥150 to ¥160). ↳ JR has also made it so that IC cardholders (Suica, Pasmo)will benefit from slightly lower fares than for paper tickets which increased of around 9% more. ↳ JR East, Tokyo Metro, Tokyo Metropolitan Transportation Bureau, etc. have announced that they will revise the price of tickets that allow you to get on and off railway lines in Tokyo. Here are the passes affected: Tokyo Metropolitan Ward Pass Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway Common 1-day Ticket Monorail & Tokyo Ward Pass Tokyo Free Ticket Leisure Holiday Suica Pass Holiday Outing Pass ↳ Along with those few passes, on the Shinkansen side, the increase applies only to the following lines: * Tohoku Shinkansen (except Hokkaido, between Shin-Aomori and Shin Hakodate Hokuto stations) * Yamagata Shinkansen * Akita Shinkansen * Joetsu Shinkansen * Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Joetsu Myoko only (so Tokyo - Nagano - Kanazawa routes will not be affected by this price increase) 🌸April 1, 2026 ↳ Taxi fares to increase avg. 10% across 26 of 39 regions in Japan. The largest price increase is 15.54% of Miyazaki (the whole of Miyazaki Prefecture). ↳ Nishitetsu (Fukuoka) to implement Initial fare approx. ¥170 → ¥180; overall increase approx. 11–12%; commuter passes approx. +15%. ↳ Shimabara Railway (Nagasaki) implements and overall fare increase approx. +19.8% (first major revision in ~20 years). 🌸July 1, 2026 ↳ International Departure Tax and entry fees will be raised from ¥1k (USD$6.70) to ¥3k (~USD$19). These fees are included in your plane ticket so you never see this charge unless you look at your itemized receipt on your plane tickets. 🌸November 2026, ↳ Japan will be changing their tax exemption system for tourists. When this happens tourists will pay the full tax upfront and apply for a refund at the airport during departure.
