People in Ireland consume too much US financial advice.
We don't have credit scores in Ireland!

My brother who has a degree in accountancy and runs the family business gave me the exact same advice and
never again!. Also a few yrs ago I was applying for planning and had to appeal to an bord pleanala which took 9 mnth the price of building sky rocketed while I waited so I bought a small house that came up in my budget and I love it!. Then a few mnths later I was granted planning. Since then my family are all encouraging me to get another mortgage and build the house and rent it out so it will be in the family for future nieces/nephews. I don't see the sense of putting myself into a 2nd mortgage that will drain every penny of my paycheck to build a house that will go well over budget and then manage renting it out and pay tax on that. I currently focus my money to max my AVC into my pension and I am working on a bridge fund to potentially retire early or step bavk from corprote. I plan to use the upcoming irish scheme to its full potential. My whole family think I'm stupid and missing a great opportunity but I don't see any of them looking to take the planning off me and build themselves. I'm 42 so I would be in debt well into retirement.

we're just turned 40 and it took that long to be financially free. All basics covered mortgage, food etc. Only loans i have had is a car loan which is normal and nothing new it was 4 years old at the time. We go on 3 holidays a year which yes its the main expense for us in the year but worth it as we didnt go on holidays til 2020 as we had nothing to save then

This is only a thing in America... In Ireland you don't need to get a loan to get a good credit rating.... I bought my 1st 2 cars in cash, never had a loan until my mortgage which I had no issue getting it

What about young families with mortgages child care and the day to day bills you honestly think they have 20 to 30k just sitting around to buy a car would you stop. Yeah great if you have money their but that’s how most families live we need to borrow from time to time yes the interest rate is insane but what else can they do so instead of telling people what we already know come up with a better solution if you can

I'm the UK where they actually have credit scoring and you can view your credit rateinh, getting a loan is important to prove you can pay back a loan. It really does help with mortgages etc. Not in Ireland

This is the wrong way of thinking though. The problem is the BANK are not giving any decent returns on rates and the prices of rates for borrowing is sky rocketing. The whole idea of a car loan is to get it at 3-5% and use the Cash you were going use and invest it to get 7-9% and then the car has paid for itself.

Save the €6k but then invest it and take out the loan. If things go wrong you have money to sort it out otherwise you benefit from a cash flow perspective and investment return should cover the interest

10K over 3 years costs about 30 quid in interest then you have that 10K for other purposes if needed. Also it can be a lot easier to pay 200 quid a month than it is to save 200 quid a month and then there's the waiting time.
