Day 3/100: Homemade Tortilla Chips Welcome to Clear Skin Kitchen, where I give the foods you love an upgrade to be a little more skin and health supportive. Because when it comes to acne, I don't believe in deprivation or perfection. I believe the best way to follow healthy eating habits that support clear skin, is to make the food TASTE GOOD. While chips are not a “health food” per se, if I know anything from being in this industry for over a decade, it’s that people (including me!) want their favorite comfort foods, simply made with better-for-you ingredients. So spending $7 to buy tortilla chips made with avocado oil felt like a clear skin upgrade…until… A new UC Davis study tested chips marketed as being made with avocado oil—and found that 93% of them contained other vegetable oils not listed on the label. So instead, I’m making my own. And these are crispy, crunchy, dippable, and ready in less than 15 minutes. INGREDIENTS 10-12 organic corn tortillas* (5-6 inches wide) 1 Tbsp olive oil ¼ tsp unrefined salt (or more to taste) OPTIONAL 1 tsp fresh lime juice Paprika Cayenne 1. Preheat the oven to 350F/175C. In a small bowl, mix olive oil, salt, and lime juice if using. 2. Lay tortillas flat and using a silicone brush, brush the oil on both sides of the tortillas. If you want to add spices like paprika and cayenne, you can sprinkle them on now. 3. Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to cut the tortillas into chips (like a pizza). Lay the chips out flat on two baking sheets, careful not to overcrowd. 4. Bake for 8-12 minutes, until crisp. Every brand of tortilla will cook a little differently, so stay close to the oven, and check to ensure they don’t burn. Serve with fresh guac or salsa. *Any tortillas should work, but the timing may change, so watch carefully so they don’t burn.
