@chillin.with.my.h: 🫙 DON’T BREAK YOUR CANNING JARS! 🫙 If you’re canning year after year, those jars can be reused for YEARS but only if you take care of them properly! 💚 Here are my favorite ways to keep canning jars in good shape and prevent cracks, chips, and breakage: 🫙 1. Don’t use damaged jars Inspect every jar before using it. If you see cracks, chips, deep scratches, or damaged rims, retire that jar. 🚫 🌡️ 2. Avoid temperature shock This is one of the BIGGEST causes of broken jars! Never put a cold jar into boiling-hot water or fill a hot jar with something extremely cold. Let temperatures change gradually. 🔥 3. Don’t put jars directly on the bottom of the canner Use a proper canning rack so water can circulate around the jars and they aren’t sitting directly on the hot bottom of the pot. 💧 4. Keep jars covered with water when water-bath canning Follow the tested recipe’s instructions for the correct water level. Don’t let the water level drop below the required amount during processing. 🥫 5. Don’t overfill jars That little bit of headspace matters! Too little headspace can cause food to expand and push against the lid, increasing the chance of seal failure and messes. 🥄 6. Don’t bang jars together Glass can develop tiny weaknesses from being knocked against the sink, counter, or other jars. Handle them gently! 🧼 7. Skip abrasive cleaners Avoid anything that can scratch the glass. Scratches can weaken jars over time. 🫧 8. Don’t stack jars carelessly Store them somewhere they won’t constantly bump into each other. If stacking is necessary, follow the jar manufacturer’s recommendations. ❄️ 9. Be careful when freezing in jars Only use jars specifically suitable for freezing, leave the recommended headspace, and never put a hot jar straight into the freezer. Glass + rapid temperature changes = 💥 🍲 10. Never use a jar straight from the refrigerator in a hot water bath Let refrigerated jars warm gradually before exposing them to high heat. 🫙 11. Remove the rings after processing Once jars have cooled and been checked for a seal, remove the rings before storage. This lets you spot problems and prevents rings from rusting onto the jar. 🔍 12. Inspect jars EVERY season Just because a jar survived last year doesn’t mean it’s automatically safe this year. Run your fingers around the rim and inspect the entire jar under good lighting. 💚 13. Reuse jars—but retire questionable ones! A jar isn’t worth saving if you’re unsure about its condition. When in doubt, toss it or repurpose it for dry storage instead of canning. ♻️ And here’s the BEST part… Canning jars aren’t necessarily one-season items! With proper care, good-quality canning jars can be reused again and again. The key is simple: inspect them, handle them gently, avoid temperature shock, and retire anything damaged. 👇 How old is the oldest canning jar you still use?! Tell me in the comments! 🫙❤️ 📌 SAVE this for canning season & SHARE it with your canning buddy!#garden #growyourownfood #gardening #canning #jars
