Dr. Kelley Hale opened his first hospital in Wilmington in 1914. As the need for medical care grew, he went on to build the larger Hale Hospital in 1923 the brick building that still stands today. The property became more than just a hospital. Dr. Hale began developing the surrounding grounds and arboretum, and his son, Dr. Nathan Hale, continued that work for years. Hale Hospital served the Wilmington community until 1964. For decades, people walked these halls seeking treatment, recovering from illness, visiting loved ones, and working within these walls. Today, the outside still gives you a glimpse of what Hale Hospital once was. The name remains carved above the entrance, and much of the building's original character can still be seen. But step inside, and it's a very different story. Peeling walls, crumbling plaster, rusting radiators, damaged stairways and deteriorating rooms now fill a building that once cared for generations of people. Seeing the condition of the interior makes its history feel even more fragile.
