Molting is how hermit crabs grow! Just like how a snake sheds its skin, a hermit crab will shed its exoskeleton:) a hermit crab will dig and burrow under the substrate, and spend anywhere from a few weeks to multiple months molting! Length and frequency in molting can depend on size. A larger hermit crab will generally molt less often, but for longer. And a smaller hermit crab will generally molt more often, but for shorter amounts of time! After shedding their exoskeleton, they will eat it. It’s a great source of calcium and it will help harden / strengthen their new exoskeleton. Molting is a very vulnerable process for hermit crabs. Never go digging or looking for your hermit crabs, if they are molting it could greatly harm them or even k*ll them. Or, messing with the substrate and disturbing it could cause the sand to collapse around them while they are buried, which will suffocate them. It’s important your substrate is a 5:1 ratio of sand to eco earth, and sand castle consistency. Sand castle consistency substrate will pass the “poke test”, if you poke the substrate, the hole your finger created will hold its shape. This means that the tunnels and burrows they create to molt will also hold their shape, and not collapse on them:) I have a helpful video on proper substrate on my TikTok if you need! Proper substrate and a proper diet is key to a successful molt for hermit crabs. Without proper conditions to molt, a hermit crabs health will suffer and could lead to death.
