As of 10 a.m. on August 31, road restoration efforts had advanced 533 meters. With fast-flowing water and little room to operate machinery, workers are bringing in large rocks to rebuild the roadbed and clear a path toward the port. #mudslide #Xizang

A subsequent scientific study identified 55 glacial lakes upstream and explicitly recommended assessing the risk of another flood before reconstruction. Despite this, the port was rebuilt in the exact same location. Now, in August 2026, another flood has destroyed it again, with at least 16 dead and over 500 missing. Were the 2025 safety recommendations ever considered before the rebuild? And if not, why?"
