![THE OAK EXPEDITION — RECOVERED REEL 004 [ POCKET MONSTERS — INCOMPLETE DOCUMENTARY FEATURE 1958 ] The case was recovered in 1961. Three of the five were still inside. Between 1958 and 1960, a naturalist survey unit working under a regional forestry grant filmed 41 minutes of 16mm footage across fourteen sites in the Kanto basin. The grant application lists the purpose as “photographic record of undocumented fauna.” The final expenditure report, filed eleven months late, lists containment materials, structural timber, and compensation to four families. The field index was recovered with the case. Every entry written by hand — dentition, mass, feeding interval — in the same script throughout, until the final nine pages, which are in a different hand and record no names at all. Station nine went quiet in March 1960. The incident report is two lines long. The wall had gone outward. No one on duty that night reported hearing anything. The footage was never assembled into a release print. The reels were catalogued by a regional archive in 1963 under a classification that no longer exists, then transferred twice, then not transferred again. The survey’s principal investigator gave no interviews. His only recorded statement on the subject appears in a letter to the forestry board dated August 1960, declining a request to expand the programme. The letter is one sentence. He wrote that the first ones were small, and that this had been the mistake. The final segment of the reel is interior footage from a laboratory that appears on no site list in the grant documentation.
