@elorm_alek: January 13th, 1972. Prime Minister Kofi Busia is in London for medical treatment when, back in Accra, Lieutenant Colonel Ignatius Acheampong seizes the government. No shots fired. Radio just announces it's done. Busia goes in front of a camera and refuses to accept it. His words: 'I am the elected head of the government of Ghana... There has only been an adventure by a small band of the military people stationed in Accra... I have no doubt it will fail.' Here's what gets skipped, the charges Acheampong uses to justify the coup, economic mismanagement, arbitrary arrest, are almost word for word the same charges used against Kwame Nkrumah back in 1966. Same script, six years later. And underneath the official justification is a much pettier one: Busia had just cut the military's budget and killed officers' vehicle allowances. This was, in real part, an amenities coup. Now here's where it gets personal. Two days later, a retired officer named Akwasi Afrifa is arrested. This is the same Afrifa who helped overthrow Nkrumah in '66. The same Afrifa who personally chaired the commission that handed power back to Busia in 1969. He's the one trying to organize a counter-coup to put Busia back in office. It fails. He's jailed until December. Seven years later, June 26th, 1979, Jerry Rawlings' revolutionary council puts both men in front of a firing squad on the same day. Acheampong, the man who took the power.
