@igcwithonome: Someone asked me how I “cope” with leaving my hair out, and I genuinely didn’t understand the question. That goes to show how much I’ve grown! I too would’ve asked the same question to someone else up until a few months ago. The average Nigerian woman is conditioned to hide her hair. From relaxers to braids, wigs & “low cuts”, Afro hair has always been something to run away from. And there’s always some superficial legitimate reason that makes it “not that deep”. Personally, I got tired. My body is not a never ending revamp project. If it’s not my hair, it’s my tummy, or my waist, or my skin! Choosing to start wearing my God-given hair is (amongst other critical reasons) a massive act of rebellion against euro-centric beauty standards. I am not a variation of the norm so there’s no need for me to encourage a system that treats me (& the women who look like me) like we’re different. To all the Afro hair influencers and content creators, I want to say a massive thank you! A lot of you have inspired me to wear my hair boldly. I’ve been learning how to care for my Afro hair and it’s been such a liberating journey. I hope I too can inspire others to do the same ❤️
