@henryfudgeofficial: The US pays 5.21% to borrow for 30 years. The UK pays 5.73%. Cloudflare just borrowed $2.5bn at 0%. Same fortnight. Investors are not mad. They are being paid in something other than cash, and it shows how the AI boom has repriced money for big tech while everyone else pays more. Capped call explained inside. #aibubble #finance #economics #useconomy #macroeconomics
this is the fundamental problem of modern investment, capital, debt and yields.
everything relies on everyrhing else not going belly up on average over time.
when investments were linked to genuine assets and markets were restricted and regulated the risk was on the investor. now, with everything so closely tied together, these schemes cant be allowed to simply fail as it would bring down pensions, banks, governments and not just the investor. relying on there always being an option to finance your way out of trouble is like taking a second mortgage to cover while you get a better job. eventually a small knock takes out the whole pyramid and governments as the last supporter of a currency has to step in.
privatised profit with socalised risk. its costs everyone and whilst the returns generally benefit a majority in a better economy, when the shit hits the fan, its the majority that suffer.
our costs slowly rise to protect the investors in the hope that their investment provides more income for us. but money only ever moves one way and that's up out if our pockets

So I am slightly concerned this will be a new trend, where the bonds being dumped into your pensions may now not only be from crap companies but also be only repaid in call options that may expire worthless on crappy companies

Isn’t TAM just the potential size of the whole market? Did they specify their SAM within that in the deck?

Surely this house of cards can’t persist. Stacking imaginary abstractions on top of each other with real side effects, seem insurmountably dangerous.

So its basically a loan where your interest is gambling on a win? To me it seems like the companies may be taking that risker option to stay above their reference point

This is insane. Isn’t the figure like…90% of tech companies go out of business? Who would ever look at the 2001 bubble and think writing instruments off any of those companies is a good idea. Yahoo? aol? Netscape? These were also spoken of as durable, billion dollar companies.

Cloudflare sold 5 year bonds so compraring to 30 year treasury is not a fair comparison especially since the term premium on treasuries is high atm
