@chicano.files: If Mexicans are just immigrants… why do so many American cities still have Mexican names? Los Angeles. San Diego. Sacramento. San Francisco. Santa Barbara. Monterey. These names are more than words on a map. They are reminders that Mexican history in this region did not begin with modern immigration. Before California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas became part of the United States, much of this land had already been shaped by Indigenous peoples and later by Spanish and Mexican communities. Then the map changed. But many of the people were already there. That is why Mexican-American history cannot be explained with one simple question: “Who crossed the border?” Because history is more complicated than that. Some families came to the United States through immigration. Some families lived in territories that later became part of the United States. Some families have stories that include both. And perhaps that is why identity matters. Because sometimes, when we look at the names of the cities around us, history is still speaking—even when we were never taught to listen.
