A few months ago I pushed these long sticks into the ground to make living willow structures. They have already started to come alive and grow. I have a willow bed which I grow for the purpose of harvesting and using for other projects. I planted the willow bed by simply pushing willow sticks (or cuttings) into the ground. By the end of their first summer they had grown to 8ft tall. I was then able to harvest the long sticks to use to make living willow structures and for weaving. Every year I cut my willow bed right back to the ground, to encourage the long whippy workable growth that I need for my willow projects. In February this year I made two living structures. A mini tent for my ducks and a willow fence. To make the tent I pushed long sticks into the ground around in a circle shape. I used a bin lid as a template. I tied them together at the top and used a few extra sticks to weave in and out around the sides for extra strength and interest. It’s now sprouting. To plant the fence I set up a string line laid a tape measure down so I could plant the sticks in a straight line and at equal intervals. I used sticks about 8 ft long to create a 3ft high fence. I pushed the first two sticks into the ground 1.1m apart, and wove the two ends together to create an arch. Sticks are pushed in so that about 25cm are below the soil surface. Then it was a case of making more interlocking arches to complete the fence, shifting them along them roughly 27cm each time and weaving any crossing sticks to hold them together. For extra support, I bashed tree stakes in at either end and ran a wire between them, tying the willow into the wire. I’ll remove this after a couple of years. I’ve been keeping well watered. Faster growing varieties that produce long straight whips are best a living willow fence. I have used Harrison’s. Any basket weaving variety would be fine!
