Олег с днем рождения
On March 26, 2024, at 1:29 a.m., the 984-foot container ship MV Dali departed the Port of Baltimore for Sri Lanka. As it approached the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the vessel suffered a total electrical blackout, losing all propulsion and steering. The crew issued a frantic mayday call just seconds before the 100,000-ton ship slammed into a critical support pillar, causing the 1.6-mile steel structure to collapse into the Patapsco River in less than 50 seconds. Six construction workers who were repairing potholes on the bridge deck were plunged into the 47°F water and perished. One survivor was pulled from the wreckage with severe injuries. Investigators from the NTSB spent over a year meticulously examining the ship's miles of wiring. In late 2025, the final report revealed the "bizarre" cause: a single loose signal wire, improperly installed with a plastic label band, had vibrated loose and triggered a catastrophic failure of the ship's circuit breakers. As of February 2026, the case remains a legal battleground. While the ship's owners settled a $102 million civil claim with the U.S. government for cleanup costs, a federal judge recently allowed the company to move forward with a 19th-century maritime law to limit their total liability to just $43.7 million. Several crew members have remained "marooned" in Baltimore for nearly two years under federal detention while the criminal investigation by the FBI continues toward a major trial set for later this year.
