Wow what a show!! Hard to know where to begin… so many amazing exhibits and creations, so beautifully and thoughtfully staged, such a feast for the eyes, ears and mind, Es Devlin has created something so deeply moving. The exhibition opens with a room filled with makers work spaces - time-worn tools, works in progress, tests, samples etc - familiar scenes for those of us who work with our hands. Then a short film begins, starting with the evolution of the human hand, and so the stage is set for the rest of the exhibition. We are then led into a room filled with black and white portraits of the 500 makers taking part, a reminder that every piece on display is the result of a human’s efforts: trial and error, innovation, skill, patience and determination. From there the exhibits are arranged in a series of rooms, each more technically mind-blowing and curiosity-piquing than the last. My stained glass panel, “Eutierria”, is in a room entitled “An Infinite Birdsong”- a collection of works celebrating nature. The room is completely lined with mirrors, creating an amazing effect that the floor carries on for several stories below you, and the ceiling stretches way up above you. Each artwork is displayed in an illuminated glass case, with decoration inspired by Venetian architecture. It was quite hard to photograph it as there is a lot of reflection, but visually it is absolutely stunning. Impossible to get pictures of all the works that made me gasp in wonder and amazement (also phone battery was draining rapidly!) but hopefully you can get a flavour of the exhibition from this reel and I’ll post some more images in my stories.
