RV owners, this Is a tip I will share over and over again. why? because I see this done incorrectly over and over again - and doing it properly is a lot more important than you think. Your shore power connection is the single point where all of the electricity entering your RV passes through. Whether you’re running one air conditioner or three, charging batteries, heating water, making coffee, running the microwave, or using space heaters, all of that power has to travel through the shore cord connection first. The problem is that electricity doesn’t like resistance. A clean, tight connection has very little resistance and very little heat. But if the connection becomes loose, corroded, worn, damaged, or isn’t fully seated, resistance increases. Increased resistance creates heat. Heat damages the connection, which creates even more resistance and even more heat. It’s a vicious cycle that often ends with melted plugs, burned receptacles, damaged wiring, or in severe cases, a fire. This is why I always tell RV owners to inspect their shore power connections regularly. Look for discoloration, melted plastic, pitting on the blades, loose connections, or signs of overheating. Make sure the plug is fully inserted and the connections are clean and secure. Most RV electrical failures don’t happen because too much power is being used. They happen because a connection somewhere couldn’t properly handle the power being used. A good shore power connection isn’t just about keeping the lights on.
