@lerko999: Russia and Ukraine edit🇷🇺🇺🇦✊️ Russia and Ukraine share a long and complicated history that goes back to Kyivan Rus', a medieval East Slavic state centred on Kyiv that emerged in the late 9th century. Although both modern Russia and Ukraine draw part of their history from Kyivan Rus', they later developed along different paths. After the Mongol invasions in the 13th century, Ukrainian lands came under different powers, including Lithuania and Poland, while the Russian lands gradually became centred around Moscow. In the 17th and 18th centuries, much of Ukraine came under increasing Russian control, and eventually large parts became part of the Russian Empire. During the 19th century, Ukrainian national identity continued to develop. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Ukraine briefly declared independence, but most Ukrainian territory was incorporated into the Soviet Union in the early 1920s. Ukraine suffered greatly under Soviet rule, including the Holodomor famine of 1932–33, in which millions died. Russia became the dominant republic of the USSR, while Ukraine remained one of its largest republics. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, both Russia and Ukraine became independent countries, with Ukraine voting overwhelmingly for independence. Their relationship later became increasingly tense, particularly over Ukraine's political direction and territory. In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea and conflict began in the Donbas. On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, beginning a major war that continues today.
