the idea that men cant be oppressed for being men, even as a result of a greater misogyny always feels odd to me. like black men being mistreated because they are seen as brutish and ignorant is a direct result of them being men and having ppl go "well thats actually a result of misogyny and racism centered around white women" is like yeah okay thats true. but also addressing the immediate effect on black men feels like the thing that needs to be focused on right now.

i think we’re never gonna find the perfect term bc ultimately like. yeah, trans men aren’t “oppressed for being men,” but we do experience unique types of transphobia that ultimately come from the intersection of transphobia and misogyny due to our assigned gender at birth. like the problem is still misogyny, it’s just very different kinds of misogyny from the ones experienced by trans women. i agree wholeheartedly about picking our battles !! but i do wish that transandrophobia wasn’t already deemed untouchable by so many folks bc anti-transmasculinity is so unwieldy 💀

I use anti-transmasculinity for the same reason of it’s just less likely to start a fight, but it’s always bothered me that it seems like folks are so much more concerned with trans men using “imperfect language” than the actual horrific things trans men suffer through. it’s always felt like a silencing tactic to me :/

my issue with anti-transmasculinity is that we moved away from using terms like anti-gay bc they don't accurately convey the breadth of the bigotry being enacted and causes people to not take it seriously enough. I think we have to stop being small like we were conditioned to growing up and learn to take up space bc no term is going to be accepted by those who hate us. there's always going to be someone saying "you can't use that bc of x reason" and we're just going to have to push through the backlash or we're never going to be able to actually address the issue if we keep acquiescing to those who already hate us

tbh when you talk about this discourse u say a decent amount of things that i dont fully agree with, but i follow you anyway because youre the only person on tiktok ive seen whos displayed an ability to talk about it without being upfrontly and heinously transmisogynistic. not that thats not the bare minimum, it just makes me feel less insane i think

I also don’t use transmisandry bc it just has too much negative connotation, but I do use Transandrophobia because I don’t think anti-transmasculinity refers to the same thing. Obviously it can. But if someone were to hear that word without the context of its meaning, they would probably just think oh someone who doesn’t like trans men. Transandrophobia is the parallel of transmisogyny it refers to specifically the mal gendering of trans men, and the hating of their masculinity which affects them specifically because of their transness. And too many people deny that happens, so forcing us to use words that don’t as accurately represent what we’re talking about like anti-trans masculinity is also in part a way to silence that part of the transphobia we experience. It’s a lot easier for people to comprehend the fact that people just hate trans men in general than for people to comprehend the fact that we are specifically targeted due to our masculinity.

maybe transandro-misogyny might work. since the intersection that affects us is one of misogyny and transphobia yet specifies the specific experience

I don't think the words used will ever actually matter because people will keep taking issue with the concept itself. is it right to not talk about it? no. but it is easier option that doesn't get you labeled an asshole. so I just don't talk about it 🤷♂️

as a trans woman this is also the term i use to refer to this concept, especially because it was coined by black trans men in Black Revolutionaries Of The Americas with the specific intention of keeping these things in mind and finding a word that best describes how antitransmasculinity as a concept operates too, the origins of the other two make me kinda dicey on them in addition to the linguistic issues, i wont outright discard someone's opinion because they use the other two, but it does make me more wary and i tend to point it out

I disagree w the idea that misandry doesn’t exist, it’s not a systemic kind of oppression at all, but it is a prejudice. I mean if people identify as misandrist then I think it’s safe to say that it is exists.

Yeah exactly, like I usually use transandrophobia as my go to, but not because of any semantic boxing matches, but because that's just how the specific struggles I and my peers have experienced were named to me as and how I learned more of them. But if me using that word is going to make people explode then I don't need to name any specific term to still talk about our unique collective struggle
