High-interest debt is a lot like a weed. If you only remove what’s visible but leave the root behind, it will continue to grow. That’s what can happen when you only make minimum payments. You’re sending money every month, but a large portion may be going toward interest instead of eliminating the balance. If your credit card charges 25% interest, paying it off is effectively like earning a guaranteed 25% return. You aren’t receiving investment gains, but you’re avoiding interest that would otherwise continue working against you. Paying off debt also improves your monthly cash flow. If your credit card payments total $500 every month, eliminating those balances eventually gives you $500 that can be redirected toward: Building an emergency fund Paying off another debt Investing for retirement Saving for a major goal Creating more breathing room in your budget Keep a small emergency cushion, make the minimum payment on every debt, and send your extra money toward the balance with the highest interest rate. Once that debt is gone, roll its payment into the next one. Don’t just trim your debt. Pull it out by the root.
