I think you're right, it seems like older generations placed more weight on expertise in the product/field for sales people and it was harder to jump over to a new space. I've also noticed that buyers (both B2C and B2B) are far more aware of the sales tactics these days, it's like the veil has been lifted in several ways

I went the reserve path no college degree telecom sales then financial advisor now Im a data analyst I've moved away from sales but sales teaches you more than any other role will.

Making “sales” a standalone job has been detrimental to sales. Becoming a subject matter expert, understanding your industry and truly offering solutions without any gimmicky sales techniques is a great path to success

I started my career as a sales engineer. Sold electrical equipment which required reading technical specifications and drawings. It has had early career development training programs back into the 90s and I knew sales engineers in their 70s still selling. It was a career that we did for 40 years and could make $150k/yr and was for engineers who could actually talk to people but weren’t capable of actually inventing anything 🤣

I learned so much about SAAS software when the business model was new to the world, selling the model was a huge part of selling the functionality of the software! Over time, I moved into different corporate roles, but I’ve always been in “software.” Nonetheless, I always appreciate my sales experience!!
