Psychiatrist Jennifer Tufts testified today that Lindsay Clancy gave no indication of suicidal or homicidal thoughts the day before she killed her three young children after a treatment session for postpartum depression issues. Tufts was on the witness stand for about two hours today (Friday, August 7, day 9) and will return on Monday for cross-examination. She last saw Clancy on Jan. 23, 2023. Clancy killed her children the next day. Tufts said Clancy said at the appointment "she was doing all right, a little more anxious, and the anxiety was described as the feeling of her heart racing." "She had a decreased appetite as well. She was on only two milligrams of Valium at this point, and feeling more anxious in the morning. Mood was the same: flat, anxious, no motivation, numb. She has to force herself to get out of bed and out of the house, but is able to do that, and she is sleeping okay," Tufts said, referencing her notes. "And did you ask her if she had suicidal ideation or homicidal ideation on the 23rd?" asked Jennifer Sprague, an assistant district attorney in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. "Yes, I did," Tufts answered. "What was her response?" Sprague asked. "No," Tufts answered. Tufts said she saw no symptoms or signs of psychosis and noticed no difference in Clancy's speech or ability to think or communicate. "Did you still consider her insight poor at that point?" Sprague asked. "I did," Tufts answered. “And why was were you still considering her insight poor?" Sprague asked. Tufts said "it had to do with her over attribution." "It seemed to the medications about certain symptoms that she was feeling. Meaning, like, how she felt about the Seroquel, how she felt that that was making her depressed, when in in reality, I think she was just depressed," Tufts testified. "So it was related to her thoughts about medications and how she was feeling." "So would it be accurate to state that instead of accepting that she was depressed, she was placing the blame on the medication?" Sprague asked. Judge William Sullivan sustained an objection from Clancy's lawyer, Kevin Reddington. "At any point in time, did she tell you she was planning to kill herself?" Sprague asked. "No," Tufts answered. "Did at any point in time on the 23rd, did she say she was planning to kill her children?" Sprague asked. "No, absolutely not," Tufts answered. "At any point in time during your interaction with her in that session, was there anything about her affect or demeanor, her behavior that indicated to you that she was a danger to herself or others?" Sprague asked. "No," Tufts answered. "Was there any reason, based on your evaluation of her in that that session, that would give you grounds to file a Section 12 on her that day?" Sprague asked. "No," Tufts answered. #law #crime #court
