while the universities and academics are far behind the curve, agents (robots) as students is more sci-fi then reality imho. yes; paradigms are shifting and pedagogies are changing. yes; it will continue to be a tool human students use (à la calculators, wikipedia, internet, etc.) but it’s human nature to want to learn. i don’t see that going away. but maybe the role the university plays is shifting.

This is goofy. Agents can't study and learn for you. Learning takes time for humans and we already have all knowledgeable AI tools. But when I am talking with customers or colleagues, they value hearing from me and not me holding up my phone to have my AI talk to them.

none of my graduate students are in favor of AI for all but the most basic of tasks. they have a very disdainful attitude about people who use it.

I was listening to Cross Country Checkup on CBC radio discussing students using AI to write papers. One instructor discovered many students got 100% on take home papers. The final was in-class. Most of the students failed the course.

so...... Disabled students already have something similar.... on every college bc its illegal not to. also my campus is making students submit handwritten notes as assignments. its not as catastrophic as you as believing it is. take some breaths and try confidence building skills in writing with your students. encourage them to trust themselves more and the world including you, less. encourage them to question everything & develop metacognition.

Students are not using genAI as a tool. 85% of my students have turned into zombies. THEY DONT EVEN READ THE AI OUTPUTS THEY SUBMIT. It drives me crazy when people use tool rhetoric and I’m literally watching their brains atrophy in real time

What students are going to use GenAI in the workplace and if the lazy professors don’t get up to speed they’re gonna lose their jobs because the universities are gonna shut down. You need to be embracing their use of GenAI by students or you’re gonna lose your job and the doors are gonna shut down.

In my classes, AI is not feared, it’s leveraged. And my students use it at a cost to their credibility. They know the risks and are figuring out how to mitigate usage and trust. The students who understand this will use AI and still learn to critically think. The fear I show them is ignorance. Peter’s Law is powerful because nobody wants to be irrelevant, so showing them AI will only get them so far in life means they need to do the critical work to grow and learn when nobody is looking.
