From 1937 onward, Zionist underground organizations increasingly used bombings and assassinations in Mandatory Palestine. Irgun, known in Hebrew as Etzel, carried out a campaign of attacks that included Palestinian marketplaces and other crowded urban spaces. On July 6, 1938, bombs exploded in Haifa’s central Arab vegetable market, killing 21 people and wounding 61 according to figures later given to the British Parliament. Another explosion there later that month killed dozens more, and on August 26 a bomb in Jaffa’s vegetable market killed 24 Palestinians. Other Irgun attacks struck markets in Jerusalem and Haifa during 1938 and 1939. Contemporary American diplomatic reporting likewise described the July 1938 Haifa attack as two powerful Jewish bombs thrown into the central Arab vegetable market. Irgun later turned much of its campaign against British rule, attacking police stations, military installations and government facilities. Its operations included the bombing of British CID headquarters in Jerusalem in December 1945, the King David Hotel in July 1946, where the British administrative and military headquarters were located, and the Goldschmidt Officers’ Club in Jerusalem in March 1947. The King David bombing killed 91 people of multiple nationalities and communities. Lehi, the smaller splinter organization also known as the Stern Group, became particularly associated with political assassination. Its members assassinated British minister Lord Moyne in Cairo in 1944 and UN mediator Count Folke Bernadotte in Jerusalem in September 1948. These organizations did not exclusively attack one population or one category of target, and their tactics and objectives changed over time. But bombings of Palestinian civilian markets were a documented part of Irgun’s campaign years before 1948.
