@ugandahistoryarchives: The Enthronment Ceremony of King Olimi in 1966. Mzee Tony Geoffrey Owana’s historical documentary TOORO: FROM KASAGAMA TO OYO chronicles the resilience and continuity of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda across more than a century of turbulent geopolitical shifts. The central thesis of the essay highlights how Tooro survived multiple existential threats most notably its late 19th-century annexation by King Kabarega of Bunyoro-Kitara and the subsequent exile of its royal line. Modern Tooro’s resurgence began when young Prince Daudi Kasagama forged a strategic military alliance with Captain Frederick Lugard of the Imperial British East Africa Company in 1891. This pact allowed Kasagama to reclaim the throne, introduce Christianity, and establish Fort Portal as a thriving administrative hub throughout his transformative 37-year reign. This trajectory of stability continued under Omukama George Rukidi III, who mirrored his father’s tenure by ruling for another 37 years while cementing Tooro's national and diplomatic prominence leading up to Uganda's independence in 1962. Utilizing rare, restored archival footage from the Uganda Film Unit, the documentary captures both the grand funeral of Rukidi III in 1965 and the subsequent coronation of his 20-year-old son, Patrick Olimi Kabuyo III. The film details ancient rituals such as the symbolic mock battle defending the throne against an imposter alongside vibrant civic celebrations across Fort Portal. Though Kabuyo’s reign was abruptly halted when President Milton Obote abolished traditional monarchies in 1967, the kingdom's institutional memory endured nearly three decades of political displacement. Following the restoration of cultural kingdoms by President Yoweri Museveni’s government in 1993, Kabuyo briefly resumed his monarchical duties until his passing in 1995. His death paved the way for his three-year-old son, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, to ascend the throne as the world's youngest reigning monarch. Ultimately, Owana’s visual essay functions as both a crucial preservation of endangered African historical film and a testament to how traditional heritage can survive state abolition to remain a vital pillar of modern Ugandan identity. #fypシ゚viral #archives #creatorsearchinsights #torokingdom #owanapaedia
