South Africa acquired 26 aircraft, comprising 17 single-seat C variants and 9 dual-seat D variants, as part of the strategic defense acquisition in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Deliveries took place between 2008 and 2012, and the Gripens are based at AFB Makhado in Limpopo with 2 Squadron, the Flying Cheetahs. The Gripen C/D is designed for flexibility, able to perform air defense, air patrol, and light ground support training missions. It features a modern digital cockpit, hands-on-throttle-and-stick controls, a PS-05/A pulse-Doppler radar, and integrated electronic systems that reduce pilot workload. Powered by a single Volvo RM12 engine, the aircraft is agile, efficient, and suited to operating from shorter runways, which fits well with South Africa's diverse airfields. Pilot training is completed in the dual-seat Gripen D before transitioning to the single-seat C. The fleet also works closely with the Hawk Mk 120 lead-in fighter trainers. Although South Africa has operated a smaller active fleet in recent years due to budget and maintenance considerations, the Gripen remains the SAAF's primary advanced fighter.
