@drdrewprovan: Iron tablets can cause constipation and other side effects. Many people are keen to get their iron stores up by diet. It’s not going to work, sadly. But a high iron diet is useful after you have replaced the iron using tablets or IV iron. #haematology #ferritin #irondeficiency #dietaryiron #fyp

I'm pregnant. Ferritin is 9. Haemoglobin is 114. Tried 3 different iron tablets and liquid iron. All of them caused unbearable cramps and discomfort. I've been refused an iron infusion because "I'm not anemic yet". Making changes to my diet is my only option. I'm at a loss with what to do 😭

In 2024 I went to hospital with a very low hb of 61… I was given iron infusions and had a endoscopy scheduled. This came back as normal! I waited for weeks for results to clear me as celiac. I was later told it was due to heavy periods!!!

At what point can you just get the infusion? If you’re constantly in an up down cycle and on/off tablets (which are obvs not pleasant), why are the tablets preferred?

The iron tablets are killing my stomach. I took them alternate days for two weeks, then had to take a week off as I was constantly sore and bloated. Is it sufficient taking them over a longer period, say three times per week rather than daily?

What about a 3 year old who can’t take tablets. We’re trying the liquid iron but the taste is proving to make this extremely difficult…

Hi Doc. I've been taking ferrous fumerate every other day since Feb. I've gone from 9 to 35. Would you say that was a good rise in that time? What should I aim for?

I’ve been taking iron tablets for almost two years. I’ve stuck with the medication my GP had prescribed me. She said give it time. I was nauseated, constipated .. but I kept taking them. Adjusted to them by changing my diet around. Ferrograd C . Which has vitamin C in it .. but I eat a lot of vitamin c enriched foods now also!

Ferritin and iron deficient and low haemoglobin last year was in an awful way. Ferrous sulphate gave me a boost at first then I felt crap again after a few weeks. The doctor never said take with vit c so I started that. Then started on my own moringa powder too awaiting a colonoscopy because I noticed blood from there. Always look at the root cause like heavy periods etc. my levels have only just gone to low normal levels but I’m always tired. This takes a long time to correct as some supplements don’t work for some but others do. My diet has always included iron everyday. It could be an absorption problem or drinking too much tea and coffee make sure you do your research

After having very low haemoglobin (75) and ferratin (12), I had two iron infusions in July before my hysterectomy four weeks ago which worked marvellously and my ferratin is now over 200 (Hb 130). Obviously I'm no longer taking an iron supplement, but should I be considering iron at all in my diet or just forget about it completely until I retest in 3 months then see where it's at?
