A 2025 review proposes that the scattered symptoms of hEDS/HSD (joint instability, chronic pain, dysautonomia, even immune issues) may share one thread: the fascia. Imaging studies in hypermobile patients show the fascia is thickened, glides poorly, and is densely innervated with pain nerves, and the proposed loop is self-reinforcing (overactive cells lay down excess tissue, gliding drops, pain rises, repeat). Honest caveats: this is early and gets oversold. It’s a few small studies from largely one research group, the authors can see what’s happening but not why it starts, fascia is one piece of a complex picture (not the sole cause), and a structural finding doesn’t mean “fascia release” fixes it.
