I don’t necessarily think you’re wrong for returning the money, but I feel like you’re making a big deal about a large tip. I tipped very big tips sometimes 3040 even 50% but I don’t think I would go out there and say that I’m concerned about the fact that you have a baby and that you may even money more than me. That’s a little insulting for all you know they’re billionaires and they could handle anything they want when it comes to money. It says to that customer you think I need more than you? just keep the money and appreciate the fact that you stayed late for them and that’s it. Giving them back the money could be definitely insulting.

I have owned bars, restaurants and in the casino business. I know about tipping. Your heart was in the right place but you were wrong. You should never bring up the amount of a tip to a customer. Large or small. You said something smart. Don’t worry about table to table tips worry about month end tips. Just my opinion.

I value your opinions in the business. Been a bartender 32 years. I have to ask though. Did you bring up the elephant in the room comment first? Maybe they didn’t sense there was that awkwardness until you said something. I would’ve said everything you said ONLY if they brought it up first. I tell my guests there is absolutely no rush. We give the absolute same service if you walk in AT closing. Kitchen knows they’ll be cooking well past closing hour. It’s the guests right to have the same experience. You should come work with me. I’m in Providence Rhode Island!!!
