The shoebill is one of the strangest birds on Earth, looking like a creature that wandered out of the age of dinosaurs and forgot to leave. Native to the vast swamps and wetlands of East and Central Africa, the shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) can stand nearly five feet tall and is famous for its enormous, shoe-shaped bill, which gives the bird its name. Despite its intimidating appearance, it spends much of its life standing perfectly still, patiently waiting to ambush fish such as lungfish and catfish. First described scientifically in the 19th century, the shoebill belongs to its own unique family and is more closely related to pelicans than to storks, which surprises almost everyone because evolution apparently enjoys practical jokes. With its piercing stare, slow deliberate movements, and prehistoric silhouette, the shoebill has become a symbol of Africa's disappearing wetlands.
