@murd3erofcrowsttrpg: By far the most controversial mechanic from our playtests is Patience. We’re making our players feel like everyone hates them, to give them the true film noir detective experience! Were we right in adding this, or is it going too far? #murdermystery #gamedevelopment #indiegame #ttrpg #dnd

I think a patience mechanic is neat, but i also think your players should get a fair chance where, if you move away from one area for long enough, the npc's patience rebuilds.

i feel like adding questions that can add patience would make it more balanced but the important ones burn the patience harder

As person who started to enjoy investigation games I really like the idea of the kick out mechanic. Like too many fucking times I’ve gotten bored of a game because it felt like I could do anything without any consequences.

I like the sound of that mechanic but is the play testers getting frustrated in a “oh this is gonna take some work figuring out” or “this annoys me to the point of not finishing the game”? Bc there is a limit, even if you like the mechanic.

i think it’s a cool mechanic but i also think you’re toeing a line of ‘too frustrating to play’ some people might genuinely just not play bc it’s too frustrating and that might limit your fan base. i’d say to compromise add a setting for ‘easy mode’ where they have more patience for you, then you could even add a ‘challenging mode’ where they have even less patience with you. just something to keep more players interested and actually wanting to play

There could be an ability like "Oh and one more thing" where you get to ask a last question even though their patience is gone, with a higher chance to go awry.

On one hand, it's good that the mechanic has design goals and explicit reasons to exist. But if every play test hated it, then something about it isn't good. Maybe it's not clear that the mechanic is going to engage and is going to cut them off soon. Maybe people kick you out a little too soon.

This is definitely right, but I think you should add clever ways for an extra chance for the players who are paying attention to details, like giving the characters a specific gift or item.

I love this, as an impatient person I can relate to the NPCs 😂 I also feel the replayability for me is ace, it will make me want to play through again to see where other threads lead.

It’s good but individual characters should be harder or easier to get information from depending on their personality

This sounds like a great pacing mechanic. There is often the effect when players get stuck in a stagnant dialogue or decision paralysis. The scene has already lost its spark, but the instinct to explore EVERY option keeps you stuck. If you are left wanting more (the frustration) that can actually a good thing in making the game and story interesting.

I think it entirely depends how frustrating it becomes. If players put down the game, or after finishing the game only have negative views of the game because of how frustrating the mechanic is then it's not a good mechanic. But if it's the right balance of frustration and reward FOR that frustration, then it's a great mechanic.

Sometimes, you need to frustrate your players for them to feel like they’ve truely struggled

I’m excited to see how this game plays! I have a really random question: as someone who has 0 dice, how many dice will I need for this game? And will the crow plush be able to store them all?

i think it should reward players in some way for leaving to investigate other options. if they're gone enough maybe the npcs will need more willing to answer questions again

If the mechanice serves no other purpose than to stop people playing, then it's not a very good mechanic. Its a neat idea and fits the idea of a nosey detective, however if you are trying to follow a lead and are stopped then that feels artifical. Having them being unable to puesue lines of questioing without the right statements, contradictong aliabes or evidence feel more like a natural road block and gives them the insentive to look else where. additionally in detective media upsetting people usually helps the reveal small details by accident.

I feel like that's what games are missing vs reading a solid Agatha Cristy novel. In the books you dont get to push back. You've gotta use your actual wits to figure it out. Games, by design, hold your hand and let you perfect it. This is solid

It would be good ... if you give the players the option to pursue a bad ending. . Because I am 100% petty enough to actually leave when asked and let the murderer wreck havoc in the forest.

i think youre treading a fine line between the game mechanics as art and genuinely just making the game less fun. you might need to ease up on this one a bit, put some leniency in
