That makes sense at least. Other than the band, most people usually say "# places and #" when counting... But yeah, we use shorthand a lot. You don't hear it quite as often for the hundreds, but for thousands you do like years might be "class of 2 thousand and 2" - 2002, aka class of "Oh two" target than "zero two"... But current year is "twenty twenty-six" 20 26. I just noticed we also use "zero" usually for math numbers "divide by zero" but for things like phone numbers or other zip codes, we say "oh" like the letter. "my phone is 7 oh 6..." So, like everything in American English, everything is just random. At least we aren't alone there! My Canadian friends had to explain to me why they use one temperature degrees for outside and another for inside or cooking. [Innocent] I still don't get it.
