A declaração foi dada em entrevista ao Metrópoles na terça-feira (1º/9). “Nunca fui a favor [das urnas eletrônicas]. Porque, conhecendo o mundo da eletrônica, a gente sabe que tudo isso é facilmente penetrável”, afirmou Pimenta. Questionado sobre o motivo de disputar as eleições mesmo sem confiar nos equipamentos, respondeu: “É a eleição que tem, não sou eu quem faço as regras”. Perguntado se confia no sistema eleitoral brasileiro, respondeu: “Não confio”. Sobre a existência de provas que atestem a vulnerabilidade das urnas, Pimenta disse não estar acusando ninguém de interferência. “Veja bem: não estou acusando ninguém de fazer nada. Só digo que as urnas eletrônicas abrem a possibilidade de que alguém faça algo. É um aparelho eletrônico e, como tal, vulnerável. A França, por sua vez, permite a votação pela internet para cidadãos que vivem fora do país em eleições legislativas e consulares. Na Estônia, o voto remoto pela internet está disponível para todos os eleitores desde 2005, com uso de cartões de identidade digitais criptografados e celulares. Ao defender sua posição, Pimenta citou uma decisão do Tribunal Constitucional Federal da Alemanha.
