As someone in the uk- she’s nots wrong, a lot of people do walk their dog off leash in the UK- but I’m bloody tired of it! Very rarely are they under control, and as much as they legally should be under control at all times if off leash- they more often than not, aren’t. As someone with a reactive dog it’s tiringggg

There are a lot of horse people who also use those trails in the UK who take major issue with how normalized off leash dogs are. I’ve seen so many videos of out of control unleashed dogs with irresponsible owners going after horses and riders that are walking on the trails. Horses and riders can get extremely hurt and possibly die from that type of behavior

I see soooo many videos (ESPECIALLY in the UK) where dogs are OFF LEASH and have gone after horses or other livestock! I’ve seen videos of rider being thrown off their horses because of these dogs, horses having to be put down because OFF LEASH dogs were chancing the poor animal and the horse ran in the middle of a road and got hit by a car… if your dog doesn’t have a FULLY RELIABLE recall, there’s absolutely NO REASON for it to be off leash! They make long lines for a reason! You can have a 30 foot long line for your dog to have freedom!

I have seen so many videos of off leash dogs in the Uk charging at people riding on horseback on trails- and the owners do nothing. Their sense of entitlement to be anywhere doesn’t always lead to peaceful sharing. 😂

I’m from the UK and my dog is a recovered reactive dog who became reactive because he was attacked by an off lead dog on his first ever walk. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to shout at someone for letting their (usually also reactive) dogs just do whatever. Thankfully my dog is much better now, but no one else’s dogs seem to have improved 😭

it's actually very frustrating as a dog owner in the UK, plenty of people walk their dogs off lead who have absolutely terrible recall of them, and absolutely should not be letting their reactive dogs be off lead anywhere near anyone else - no matter how small and "non threatening" they are

As a Brit with a dog, I'm absolutely sick to death of off-lead dogs with no recall. I think it's deffo an older generation thing, because my father-in-law will NOT stop asking us when we're gonna start walking our 6-month-old Border Terrier off lead 😭 We have a fair few dog parks in my area, where you can hire out a 2-3 acre fully fenced-off area by the hour, which is the only place we regularly let Maggie off her lead.

When I talk to horseback riders in the UK (and many post about it on this app!) they are so fed up by being dangerously chased by out of control off leash dogs. Whatever country you are in, if your dog isn’t under voice control- it should be on a leash!!

I think the comment is also just wrong. Whilst it is common to have dogs off-lead a lot more in the UK than the US, our culture is definitely NOT "off lead except by roads". The biggest part of our lead culture is the understanding that if you approach a dog on lead, you put your dog on a lead (and vice versa). It is also expected to have dogs on lead in areas with vulnerable wildlife or livestock, however unfortunately this is not regulated very strictly or often. Sadly a lot of dog owners are entitled and don't follow these social expectations, which may be where the commenter's ideas of UK lead culture come from.

wait this is so interesting bc I always got the impression US owners have their dogs off leash a lot more than we in Germany would cuz most videos I see have dogs running free and disappearing out of view, which I'd be terrified to do here 😅

In the UK here, I truly believe that walking your dog on leash is the responsible thing to do. Even a dog with perfect recall can make a mistake, and those mistakes can be awful. As someone who's into ecology and conservation, I will always promote indoor cats and on leash dogs.

I grew up around hunting dogs that were almost always off lead but they were always kept under control. Dog ownership has increased massively in the UK and it's causing a lot of problems because the general public knows nothing about dogs. From my experience most people in the UK don't know much about local wildlife either. I love the right to roam but uneducated and disrespectful people are ruining it.

it is absolutely NOT unusual for dogs to be on lead in the uk. my little patterdale hasn't been off lead outside of family's gardens for a long time due to deafness, sight issues, and the chance of reactivity around other dogs (she cant see or hear them, so she's more likely to snap)

Norway has the same public access to land as UK, but most of the country has very strict leash laws to protect wildlife. I can let my dog off leash in appropriate areas, but if he sees an animal or a person, he is running towards that at full speed

Dangerous wildlife just isn’t as much of a consideration for people and their dogs in the UK compared to Canada and the US. In the major Canadian city I live in, the green space my condo backs onto is home to coyotes and bobcats. If I go 6km south to a popular nature conservation park I now have moose and black bears to watch out for with as well as a boundary with First Nations land. When I lived in Colorado a trail I would walk with my previous dog had rattlesnakes. It is unlawful for dogs to harass wildlife, and I’m also not going to put my dog in a situation off-leash where he can be hurt by a much larger animal.

idc where you live, if your off leash dog doesnt have reliable consitent recall they shouldnt be offleash at all, and even if they do, they should NEVER be out of your eyesight.
